SALAMANCA
Language Travel Spain: Jesus Baz - Director of Studies, LTS Salamanca.

"On behalf of all those who work here, I would like to warmly welcome you to the magical city of Salamanca. Magical, because the ideal elements are here to be able to travel in peace and a good atmosphere, combined with the possibility to go out and have a good time after a heavy day.
According to tradition, Salamanca has always been characterized by its cultural atmosphere. The people who come to Salamanca remember the city for its educational institutions, its streets which are busting with life (there are more than 50.000 young people traveling at the university), its monuments (it was not for nothing that UNESCO named Salamanca the Guardian Angel of Humanity), its pure Castilian, its gastronomy and most especially the friendliness and hospitality of its inhabitants.
In short, the city is something special. ¡Hasta pronto!"

Jesus Baz
Head of Studies LTS Salamanca.

The City

Salamanca lies on a plateau by the Tormes river and is one of the most spectacular Renaissance cities in Europe. Through the centuries the sandstone building have gained an exquisite golden glow which has given Salamanca the nickname "La Dorada", the golden city.
In 1218, Alfonso IX of Castile and León founded a university there. This makes it one of the oldest universities in Europe and has made Salamanca world famous.
The city is large enough (180.000 inhabitants) to be able to offer the advantages of a real city, but at the same time it keeps the intimacy of a village. In Salamanca, the inhabitants speak the "purest" Spanish in Spain - Castilian. For this reason Salamanca is enormously popular with people all over the world who want to learn Spanish.
Contacts are made easily. You don't have to make rendezvous as you are bound to see everyone in the Plaza Mayor, one of the finest squares in Spain and known as the living room of the Salamantinos. As there is such a varied range of nationalities, it is tempting to keep to fellow LTS students. Salamanca is however, a real university city, Spanish students are everywhere and you can go practically everywhere on foot.

The choice is yours: there are plenty of places where only Spaniards go. The area around Salamanca also offers many facilities for cultural and sporting day-trips to villages, the mountains or to the many lakes.

The School

The LTS school in Salamanca is situated in the heart of the historic city center. The building is 100 meters from the renowned University of Salamanca and 2 minutes from the splendid and famous Plaza Mayor.
The school is a recently restored 16th century monastery. The modern materials used during the renovation are almost in natural balance with the richness, style and class of previous centuries.
You enter the school through a beautiful courtyard. This courtyard and the garden divide the school into two parts. In the first part you will find the secretariat and the office. The second part houses 11 classrooms, a recreation room furnished with a video, hi-fi, etc., a library, a staff room and three offices.

Celebrations and festivals

The vast majority of celebrations in Salamanca have, as everywhere in Spain, a religious background. One of the most special celebrations in Salamanca is "El Lunes de Aguas" ("The Monday of Water"). On this day, the last of an eight-day religious celebrations at Easter, the inhabitants of Salamanca dress up in carnival costumes and go in procession to the river Tormes. They say that this tradition dates back to 1570 during the reign of King Philip II.

During the year there are many more festivals and festivities of which the September "Ferris y Fiestas de San Mateo" are the most spectacular. For two weeks there is a fully organized program of concerts, parades, exhibitions and markets. They are not to be missed!

Our Opinion

Salamanca is a typical university city attracting thousands of students from all over the world. You can see it in the streets and in the many busy cafés and cheap restaurants. Salamanca is not just a student city, though.
There is an abundance of architectures and art to see and the surrounding countryside is overwhelming. Putting it all together, you have a city where both young and old really feel at home.

"After going on 'Standard' beach holidays five years in a row, I really wanted something different. My friends looked at me a bit funny when I told them I wasn't going to Greece with them this year. Now that they have heard my stories and seen my photographs, they want to go next year as well".
